Winter activities in Idaho to keep you and the family busy

Feeling the winter blues? You’re probably not alone … but there is lots to do around Boise to get you outside and active.

Bogus Basin Ski Resort

Bogus Basin isn’t just for the skiers and snowboarders, but it is a great place to people watch. You can go down the tubing hill with the family or check out snowshoeing, which is an easy way for you to get outside with snowshoe specific trails up at Bogus.

If being outside in the cold really isn’t your thing, there are quite a few places to eat and drink up on the mountain. The Double R Ranch BBQ Smokehouse is great for a meal or check out the Bogus Creek Grill for grab-and-go snacks.

The Simplot Lodge is a great place to sit and eat while enjoying the views Bogus Basin has to offer. You can grab a cup of coffee or check out the High Peak Hangout if you’re 21 or older.

The Springs at Idaho City

If you really don’t like being cold but still want to experience the outdoors, check out The Springs at Idaho City. The hot springs must be booked in advance, either for the main pool area or a private pool.

There is food available for purchase on site, which you can eat on the edge of the pool or in the heated yurt. The hot springs are currently open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays to give more people time to soak.

You can also make a weekend of it by staying at the hotel about a quarter mile down the road, Inn the Pines.

Camel’s Back Park sledding

This choice is really fun for those who have children! This North End park is perfect for breaking out the sleds when it snows because of it’s rather steep hill.

Boise Parks and Recreation encourages people to go out and sled, but to be aware of other people and obstacles so nobody gets hurt. A couple years ago, Parks and Rec started putting hay bales on the trees to help prevent any injuries while people are out having fun in the snow.

Idaho IceWorld

This is a great option for those who want to enjoy ice skating activities safely and indoors. Open year round, Idaho IceWorld does get a little more popular over the winter so people can practice their ice skating ability safely.

Public skate has varying hours depending on the day. Idaho IceWorld also offers figure skating classes and hockey leagues.

McCall Winter Carnival

The McCall Winter Carnival is an occasion that is well worth the wait and the drive. Next year, the carnival will be consolidated into a single weekend at the end of February, starting the 23rd and ending the 25th.

The 2024 theme is “Color Outside the Lines” and will focus on honoring the area’s educators. There will be lots of snow sculptures of course, but also some snow activities like snowshoe golf and McPaws Monster Dog Pull.

Around 60,000 people head up to McCall every year for the carnival. The consolidation of the carnival to a single weekend will better allow the town and its businesses to serve the influx of people.
